Magic has played a surprisingly important role in the intellectual and cultural history of Europe, and this scholarly yet accessible work follows its development from antiquity through the Enlightenment. It examines how ancient societies understood magical practices, how ideas about astrology, ritual, alchemy, and supernatural forces evolved, and how changing attitudes eventually influenced the rise of modern scientific thought. Rather than treating magic simply as superstition, the book places it within the history of philosophy, religion, literature, and natural knowledge. An intriguing choice for readers interested in the historical relationship between magic, belief, and reason.
